Third Place Overall After Round Two of the Formula D Championship

Qualifying for round two at Road Atlanta was one of the toughest yet. The track surface was 130 degrees, ambient temperatures were in the 90s and the temperature inside the car was 140. On our first qualifying run, we decided to be a little conservative and ended up with a score of 81.3 points which put us in the top ten. We decided to go for more speed and angle on our second run which yielded us the second fastest entry speed of 93.7 mph. We ended up qualifying our Genesis Coupe in fifth place.

In the round of 32, we were up against Cody Parkhouse. With a great lead run we pulled away giving us a big advantage. During the second run, we kept the pressure on him, which forced him into a spin in the horseshoe bend.

In the round 16, we were up against Darren McNamara. We again led on the first run,   pulling ahead by a couple car lengths into the horseshoe bend. This may have given us a small advantage. On the next run, we knew we had to stay on him because he was only two mph slower than us entering into the first turn. When traveling at these speeds some incidental contact can occur and did. This unfortunately put us out of competition. We are pleased to be in third place overall and only four points out of second. Once again the Red Bull/RMR/Hyundai Genesis Coupe performed flawlessly.

The next round will see us at Wall Speedway in New Jersey (June 4-5). Leading up to this event we will prepare the Red Bull/RMR Hyundai Genesis Coupe, continue development of the Pikes Peak PM 580 powered by Hyundai and start testing for the 88th running of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb.

THE RMR HYUNDAI GENESIS PM580

In the world of racing, Unlimited, means “Anything Goes.” Unlike other forms of motorsport (NASCAR, Indy Car, F1, etc.) the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Unlimited Class gives teams the freedom to create any kind of race car they want to conquer the mountain without restrictions on tires, weight and horsepower. Teams can make their cars as light as possible, with an unlimited amount of horsepower and with whatever braking, drivetrain or suspension package they desire.
With this in mind, Rhys Millen Racing is fabricating a modern Le Mans style car with a target weight of 1,850 pounds powered by a 4.1-liter Hyundai Lambda turbocharged V6 engine. The team feels to have a competitive power-to-weight ratio, the car will need to produce 675 horsepower. Current engine testing shows the engine is capable of producing 750 horsepower, which is more than needed to tackle the mountain.
The car will feature a carbon fiber aerodynamic body with an active rear wing. The wing will create less drag in the straight-aways and more stability in cornering and braking. Active wings are outlawed in other forms of racing.
“We are building a car for today’s road,” said Millen “The car will have a sleek aerodynamic body, the grip of Toyo Proxy tires and the power and durability of a Hyundai engine. This is the package I need to break the record.”
The RMR Hyundai Genesis PM580 will use an active center differential. This differential will allow a 10 to 100 percent torque split to the front wheels. This is important because the course changes from asphalt to dirt multiple times and allows the Genesis PM580 to have more than one set up on the 12.42-mile course. The car will be ideal on the mixed surface at Pikes Peak. The Genesis PM580 address a fundamental reason on perhaps why the 10-minute record has not fallen. Most race cars do not work well on both dirt and asphalt.

RMR Red Bull Hyundai Genesis Coupe sits on the podium in Formula Drift at Streets of Long Beach

World Champion Driver Rhys Millen Places Second in Round One of the Formula Drift Championship

LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA., April 10, 2010 - Formula Drift has new trophy winner, the Rhys Millen Racing (RMR) Red Bull Hyundai Genesis Coupe. World Champion driver Rhys "Mad Skills" Millen piloted the Genesis Coupe to an impressive second-place finish on the Streets of Long Beach Formula Drift course. Millen also qualified first, scoring 89 out of possible 100 points on his first solo run.

"I was in sync with my Genesis Coupe during the entire campaign and step one was to qualify first."  said Rhys Millen. "The car had so much grip and power I was able to put it close to the wall and mirror the other competitors' car s' every move. Nothing compares to the pressure and thrill of the 'win or lose it' factor while competing against more than 50 other cars and drivers."

From inside the cockpit, the 2008 Red Bull Drifting World Champion beat out top drift talent incliding past Formula DRIFT Champions, Tanner Foust, Driving an 800 plus-horsepower NASCAR-powered Scion TC (third place) and Samuel Hubinette, driving an 800 plus-horsepower USAC-powered Dodge Challenger. Vaughn Gittin Jr., the event winner, was behind the wheel of a Ford Mustang.
Millen had five months during the off-season to go through his Genesis Coupe and put in all the necessary ingredients to make it into a winning car. The RMR Red Bull Hyundai Genesis Coupe now produces 650 horsepower from its stroked Lambda V6 engine and managed to tackle the infamous Long Beach Grand Prix street course.
Entering its sixth season, the Formula DRIFT Championship is recognized as the North American professional drifting championship series. This high-skilled, high-powered motor sport where drivers intentionally maneuver their cars into well executed, controlled sideways slides at high speeds through a marked course, has more than 50 professional drivers competing in all seven competitions this year. Judged on execution and style, rather than who finishes the course in the fastest time, drifting is a guaranteed crowd pleaser, and is often compared to the freestyle nature of skateboarding and motocross.

Rhys Millen Racing would like to thank all our sponsors and supporters.

Red Bull Hyundai Genesis Coupe and Rhys Millen Set World Record to Take Pikes Peak Time Attack Title

World Champion Driver Rhys Millen Claims Ninth Mountain Win

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., July 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The 87th Annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb has a new world record holder today - the Rhys Millen Racing Red Bull Hyundai Genesis Coupe. World Champion driver Rhys Millen piloted the Genesis Coupe to his ninth overall class title, breaking one of his two world records in 17 trips to the Hill Climb.

"Driving the Genesis Coupe for the first time at Pikes Peak in front of thousands of fans is an amazing experience," said Millen. "Nothing compares to the pressure and thrill of Pikes Peak while competing against yourself for the record."

Millen set the record time of 12 minutes, 9 seconds (12:09.397) more than 1 minute and 23 seconds faster than his nearest competitor in the rear-wheel-drive Time Attack Class. At the finish line on the summit of Pikes Peak, Millen reported that the car that never skipped a beat, no matter how hard he challenged the diverse terrain and high altitude, and finished with both rear tires down to steel belts. Millen utilized the Genesis Coupe's rear-drive layout to its full potential, power-sliding his Genesis Coupe mere inches away from guard rails, trees and 2,000-foot cliffs, while besting his own record of 12 minutes, 31.61 seconds by 22 seconds.

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is the second oldest motor sports race in America, second only to the Indianapolis 500, and a long-standing tradition in Colorado Springs. First run in 1916, this year marks the 87th running of the thrilling "Race to the Clouds."

The race is run on a course with 156 turns that begins at 9,390 feet and finishes at the oxygen-depleted 14,110-foot summit of Pikes Peak. As the drivers climb toward the summit, the thin air slows reflexes and saps muscle strength. The thin air also robs engines of up to 30 percent of their power at the summit. It's a true test of endurance for competitors and vehicles.

This year the race has 11 classes and features a variety of automotive, semi-truck, exhibition, open wheel, super stock car, pro truck and motorcycle classes with a field approaching 200 competitors.

With more than 16 years of racing experience, Rhys Millen has established himself as one of the premier rally/drifting drivers in North America. Born in New Zealand in 1972, Rhys is the son of famed rally and off-road racer Rod Millen. Rhys joined Rod in the U.S. as a teenager and soon afterwards established himself as racer by taking first at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb in the Open Division and winning Rookie of the Year. He won the Formula Drift championship in 2005 and the Red Bull Drifting World Championship in 2008.

Millen and his team are an ideal match to help launch Hyundai's motorsports effort with the Genesis Coupe. Millen's driving credentials include movie stunts, multiple drifting championships, a Pikes Peak world record and his recent New Year's Eve Las Vegas truck flip. But behind Millen's success in the driver's seat is a full team of engineers and fabricators that know how to maximize the potential of a race car.

Millen had his first opportunity to test drive the Genesis Coupe's performance credentials when he performed precision driving for the car's debut advertising campaign airing during Super Bowl XLIII. Millen flogged a Genesis Coupe for a full three days during the filming process at Road Atlanta racetrack, and the car never stopped asking for more.

Team RMR Red Bull Hyundai Qualifies Third at Formula D Drift New Jersey

Championship Winning Drift Driver Rhys Millen Returns To The
Third Round of 2009 Formula D Season With The New Hyundai Genenis

June 9, 2009 – Wall, New Jersey -  Championship Winning Drift driver Rhys Millen finished a strong ninth position out of a 32 car field in the third round of the 2009 Formula D series this past weekend in New Jersey.  After qualifying in third position for the competition rounds, Millen went on to achieve the second highest score from the judges throughout the entire weekend.  Electrical issues with the Hyundai Genesis compromised the otherwise strong performance by Team RMR throughout the competition.

After overcoming engineering challenges in the early stages of the Hyundai Genesis drift car’s development, Team RMR showed significant improvement and reliability with a third place qualifying position prior to the competition stages at this weekend’s event in New Jersey.  The award winning Hyundai Genesis, North American Car of the Year, proved to be a formidable challenger boasting a well balanced chassis, surgical handling and competitive levels of performance power.

“The Genesis Coupe continues to be a powerful entry in the highly competitive 2009 Formula D field,” said Rhys Millen, driver and team principle of RMR Red Bull Hyundai.  “We have achieved significant advances in engineering with the Hyundai Genesis in its freshman season, and we will continue to refine the performance throughout the 2009 season for even greater levels of competition success.”

After a strong initial showing in New Jersey, Team RMR Red Bull Hyundai continued on to achieve a respectable ninth place overall at the weekend festivities.  After very close competition during one of the rounds, the judges ruled two consecutive “One More Time” repeat ruling.  During the last of these replay rounds, the Hyundai’s engine suffered an internal misfire that forced Millen to withdraw.  The issue was later traced to an overboost in the turbo causing the engine’s electronic management to reduce ignition timing.

“The all-new Hyundai drift car continues its development and is shaping out to be a fantastic and competitive platform for this type of competition,” added Millen.  “We are able to maintain competitiveness with a relatively stock engine, running up against other highly modified cars boasting 600 to 700 horsepower.  In addition, RMR Red Bull Hyundai continues to be the highest ranking team running an all new car in the 2009 season, a testament to the quick and efficient development by Hyundai and my team.”

Team RMR Red Bull Hyundai will return for its next challenge at the forth round of the 2009 Formula D championship in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 10 and 11.  Immediately following, Millen returns to familiar ground, taking up the mountain at the 2009 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado Springs on July 19.
